Update: around 11pm today I heard screeching tires outside my home office window. I looked up to see a car frequently at the house across the street (presumably a relative) come to a stop and the driver towards the garage with a green bag in his hand. I thought it odd, but figured he had left something. Next thing I know, a cop is chasing him and they take off around the back of the house! They make two trips around, with the suspect at one point jumping on the porch and trying to open the door. It is at that point I realize I’ve seen him and car at that house on a regular basis. He’s a relative of the owners!

In a few minutes, several more police cars show up and they are congregate in the back of the house. After about 10 minutes, the front door opens and the cops begin filing out. The homeowner’s wife comes out with them and has a conversation, visibly upset but not animated, as they officer appears to be explaining the situation to her. Later they bring the suspect out in handcuffs and place him in the back of the patrol car. There is some activity still going on inside the home, with an office at one point walking out with a bag that has some type of white substance.

Over the next 90 minutes, more cars show up and my next door neighbor and I compare notes. He was in his garage and saw the car speeding down Bluegrass Pkwy, police car in pursuit. We later watch as an ambulance arrives and the suspect is placed on a stretcher and taken away. My neighbor overhears the officer telling the homeowners that he apparently swallowed something, though I witness him walk to the stretcher on his own. Still, I can appreciate the precautions they are taking. The car is photographed, fingerprinted and several bags of items, presumably personal, or removed. Interestingly, the homeowner is given the keys and parks it back in the driveway.

Phew! So that is not the way I had expected Saturday to begin. The street is clear now and we’ll get along with our day. Still, my heart goes out to my neighbors. We don’t know them well, but we are friendly and have chatted on occasion. Our hope is that they themselves are ok and have support of other family and friends as they deal with any ongoing matters related to this today.
